Dairy Fleet Smart: adopting fuel-efficiency best practices in the USA
Source : Innovation Center For US Dairy
GHG emissions in the transport and distribution links of the fluid milk value chain come almost entirely from diesel fuel use in trucks with a much smaller source of emissions coming from refrigeration
Adding up to about three percent of fluid milk’s total GHG emissions
Achieving the dairy industry’s transport/distribution goal of 20 percent reduction in GHG emissions by 2020 would cut CO2e emissions by 542,000 metric tons and
- Potentially save the industry nearly 16.5 million gallons of diesel fuel and
- At $3.50 per gallon translates to $57.7 million in fuel cost reductions
- Half the GHG reductions would be achieved through physical improvements to vehicles and the remainder would be reached through improved driver practices

Action
Analysis of energy consumption data during milk collection
Results
Fuel consumption during milk collection is very heterogeneous: from38 to 50L/100km .This consumption is only slightly connected with density of cattle rearing because of frequent stops and starts, but is much more connected to kilometres covered and driving skills.

Milk Collection Centers - Zambia
Source : Land O’Lakes
Among the ten most operational milk collection centers (MCCs) supported by Land O’Lakes, more than $2.5 million has already ended up in the pockets of smallholder dairy farmers.
These same ten MCCs have sold more than $2.8 million of milk to processors, and the volume continues to increase - 55 percent in 2008 alone! As impressive as these results are, milk sold to MCCs represents only about 40 percent of the total sold/bartered by these households.

Milk collection - Nicaragua
Facilitating Business Development Linkages that work - Zambia
Source : Land O’Lakes
Land O’Lakes Zambia has been working with smallholder farmers in dairy production since 2004. In the recent past, it has been realised that one of the challenges being faced by most farmers is availability of reliable transport for delivering milk to the milk collection centre (MCC). In the quest of helping the farmers improve on the daily milk deliveries, Land O’Lakes working together with World Bicycle Relief (WBR), developed a tailor made model of a bicycle with a capacity to carry 100 litres of milk. This robust bicycle is much stronger and durable than the ordinary bicycles found on the local market.
Eastern Dairies unites cooperatives and improves market - Uganda
Source : Land O’Lakes
Eighteen months ago, 11 primary dairy cooperatives in Eastern Uganda faced challenges in marketing their members’ milk; milk prices were low; demand for milk was volatile; and some buyers were unreliable in paying for deliveries. Acting independently, the cooperatives lacked the ability to mitigate the situation, resulting in insufficient household incomes for their more than 500 members, of which nearly 50 percent are women.
Recognizing its leveraging power, the Eastern Uganda Dairy Farmers and Breeders Association (EUDFBA), which represents the cooperatives, responded by forming a business to collect and market the milk under one name. Through assistance provided by Land O’Lakes under USDA’s Food for Progress (FFP) program, the new company, Eastern Dairies, has since increased the household incomes of its farmers by more than 50 percent.
In October 2006, Eastern Dairies set up a 2,000-liter milk cooler, financed in part by a grant from FFP. During the new dairy’s first year, the volume of milk collected from local smallholders and sold at the market in Mbale town quadrupled. Of the 55,000 liters of milk now produced each month by the 11 primary cooperatives, over 75 percent is bulked and sold collectively through the new dairy’s milk cooler.
